We are writing today (8/7) to provide you with an important update on the GAP Trail segment closure. While contractors were working to clear loose material, they identified two prominent rock hazards overhead that require further technical evaluation before the trail below can safely reopen. As a result, that trail segment will remain closed through at least Thursday, August 20.

Additionally, we know how frustrating trail disruptions are—especially during peak summer riding season—and we deeply appreciate everyone’s patience as safety work continues along the Great Allegheny Passage. We recognize the huge impact this extended closure has on long-distance cyclists, everyday local trail users, and the incredible small businesses in our trail towns that rely on summer tourism.

To help travelers bypass the closed segment, the licensed shuttle service between Homestead and Duquesne has also been extended through Thursday, August 20. Hours are 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, 7 days a week. The cost is $20 per person (cash preferred, credit cards accepted). Travel time is approximately 15–20 minutes one-way.

The RTC fully recognizes that this extended closure is occurring during the peak summer riding season, creating disruptions for long-distance cyclists, local trail users, and the small businesses across trail towns that depend on summer tourism.

Mark Place, RTC Board Chair, explained this step: “Extending a trail closure is never a decision made lightly. As trail stewards, RTC must continuously evaluate the physical condition of the corridor, including where rock formation hazards exist overhead – regardless of how clear or rideable the surface below may appear. While we share the public’s eagerness to keep every mile of the GAP open, our overarching obligation remains the physical safety of every cyclist and pedestrian who uses the trail.
