Our Mission is to assure quality construction and long-term stewardship of the Steel Valley Trail: a community driven, environmentally sensitive bicycle and pedestrian trail, accessible to people of all ages and all abilities, providing vital linkage through the Monongahela Valley near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The planned trail network is 19 miles in length, connecting the communities of Clairton, Glassport, McKeesport, Duquesne, West Mifflin, Whitaker, Munhall, Homestead, West Homestead, Pittsburgh, Swissvale, and Rankin.
The Steel Valley Trail Council (SVTC) started as a committee of the Steel Industry Heritage Corporation (SIHC, now known as the Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation). In 1996 the SIHC commissioned a Trail Alignment Study that identified the potential alignment for the Steel Valley Trail from McKeesport to Pittsburgh with a connection to Clairton. As the Steel Valley Trail grew in size and scope so did the organization, which formally incorporated in 2000. We are a member of the Allegheny Trail Alliance and the Regional Trail Corporation. We are a key partner in the development of the Great Allegheny Passage. The SVTC is made up of Individual and Family members, Corporate members and volunteers who care about this region and who have a keen interest in riverfront trail development.
