2007 Trail Art Events

On June 30, 2007 hundreds of cyclists completed the 2007 Rails-to-Trails Greenway Sojourn from DC to Pittsburgh. Our banners guided riders into McKeesport for a grand welcoming event at the Palisades building in McKeesport. The event included greetings from Mayor Brewster, a live band, lots of food and banner painting. The riders then received a police escort into Pittsburgh's Southside works where they were greeted by CTAI banners and a Bike Rodeo hosted by REI.

Giant banner at the Palisades in McKeesport welcomed sojourners from 34 states.

From the Rails to Trails Report:
The 6th Annual Greenway Sojourn, June 23–30, 2007, led 500 cyclists on a landmark ride on the longest multi-purpose trail in the country. After 20 years of trail building, the Great Allegheny Passage in southwestern Pennsylvania and western Maryland is now linked to the popular C & O Canal Towpath in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Creating 335 miles of continuous trail connecting suburban Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., together these trails make up the spine of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.

Sojourners at the welcome event in McKeesport took part in banner painting.

From the Greenway Sojourn Blog:
From Cumberland, Md., where the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage were joined last December, the Sojourn had clear cruising all the way to McKeesport, Pa. There the “grand opening ride” for the two combined trails paused for a final celebration of the accomplishment to date. Hand-painted trail banners lined the trail at the Palisades.
